A year ago, our non-profit organisation embarked on a journey to create something new: a safe, nurturing space where English-speaking immigrant women could come together, reflect, and grow. What started as a small initiative quickly became a transformative experience for everyone involved.
Over the past year, the NOVAT Programme has provided peer support groups and reflective spaces, fostering deep connections and personal growth. The impact has been profound, and while the future of the programme is still uncertain due to funding challenges, the need for such spaces has never been clearer.
A Year in Numbers
While personal stories truly capture the essence of NOVAT, the numbers also tell a compelling story:
- 35 women participated in NOVAT peer support groups, embracing self-led growth and shared reflection.
- 154 meaningful interactions took place through five peer support groups (lasting between 5–12 weeks) and the Tranquil Readers Circle.
- Nearly 90% of participants found a strong sense of support and belonging, knowing they were not alone in their experiences.
- A remarkable 95% felt heard and valued, appreciating the opportunity to share in a safe, respectful space.
- 87.5% reported increased self-awareness, helping them better understand their emotions and reactions.
- 80% experienced a boost in self-respect, reinforcing their confidence and self-worth.
Beyond the Numbers: Voices from the NOVAT Community
The impact of NOVAT goes beyond statistics. It is reflected in the shared experiences, the meaningful conversations, and the newfound sense of belonging among participants.
“The group really exceeded my expectations – my original goal was to improve my mental wellbeing, but the group created a safe and warm sense of belonging with other women that I thought was not important until I experienced it.” – NOVAT Participant
One participant described that “this group helped me understand my own thoughts better and made me feel that I am not alone and supported me immensely.” Another shared, “A sense of community and acceptance helped me to develop compassion for myself and identify my next steps.”
A group member reflected on the programme’s impact: “Having a space like this, backed by an institution that truly values self-care and self-awareness, makes all the difference. It’s rare to find initiatives that actively promote these values among women.”
The Uncertain Future & The Need for Continued Support
Despite the overwhelming success and clear impact of the NOVAT Programme, its future stays uncertain due to a lack of funding. We are currently exploring ways to sustain this initiative because we know that the need for spaces like this is real. Women deserve a place where they can reflect, grow, and support one another without barriers.
We are deeply grateful to every participant who has been part of this journey. Your presence, trust, and engagement have made NOVAT what it is today.
